Only in America! A place where a woman who admits to killing her children due to postpartum psychosis and mental health issues will have support from the public. No, this isn’t a movie or a non-fiction novel. This is a true, and yet sad, story. Lindsay Clancy (b. Lindsay Musgrove) was a young millennial mother who admitted to killing her 3 children. Why am I mentioning the millennial part? Because the stigma from Gen X and beyond labeled millennials as being soft for using mental health as an excuse in life. Basically, their old-school mentality is to toughen up when life gets rough. But not to get off topic, I felt like I had to put that out there and let it marinate for some. I’ll keep my opinion as brief as possible since it’s been 2 weeks since the aftermath of the trial and people still haven’t stopped talking about it.
January 24, 2023: Reports stated that her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out doing what fathers should normally be doing. He was out picking up items for the household if Mom wasn’t able to do it herself. While Patrick was out, Lindsay had what you called an episode. She brutally strangled her 3 young children, ages 8 months, 5 years, and 3 years old. That’s a fact, not an allegation. She admitted to the murders. And what was the motive or reason behind it? Postpartum psychosis. Now, before I continue, no, I do not have children of my own. The reason why I’m saying that is because I know the typical parental line: You don’t have kids, so you don’t know what it’s like. You have it easy, you’re so lucky, you have all the free time, you should be rich, and blah-blah, which I always hold back from telling them, is that having kids is a choice. And you made it! So just because I don’t have kids doesn’t mean I don’t understand the struggle that parents go through, especially during these times. In fact, I applaud anyone trying to have kids in this economy because the struggle is beyond real now. It’s just sad that starting a family costs way too much. But not trying to get off topic, the point is that a tragedy occurred, and there were so many questions with questionable answers.
July 20, 2026: The trial of Lindsey Clancy began. As you expected, there were high emotions on both sides of the aisle, as well as among the general public who were following the case. Doctors and psychologists gave emotional testimony, and even Lindsey’s husband, Patrick, took the stand. All this was going on while America was already dealing with a war in Iran, an affordability crisis, and also the Keefe D murder trial of hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur, all in effect at the same time. But shockingly, there were plenty of supporters of Lindsey Clancy, and they believe that she shouldn’t be fully held responsible for killing her children because she was dealing with mental health issues and was also heavily medicated.
September 4, 2026: After weeks of testimony, both the prosecutor and a defense team led by Kevin Reddington rest their case. As the jury began deliberations, the public was on edge for the verdict. Judge William Sullivan had no other choice but to declare a mistrial after the jury deadlocked 3 times. Of course, the outrage was expected. Both sides had expressed their views and opinions on the results of the trial. I personally believe Lindsay Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, made an unethical move by going to the media after the judge declared a mistrial and stated that it was one juror who was the lone holdout during the process. Reddington accused the juror of stalling the deliberations, which led to a mistrial. When he indicated that it was a man, social media went crazy, and the manhunt was on for who the man was. Then female jurors spoke out and said it was an African American man who was the perpetrator.
My final take on all this is that it’s a damn shame the attention went towards the black juror instead of Lindsay Clancy. The lone juror was not the one on trial for murder, but unfortunately was picked to be on the jury. It wasn’t his or anyone else’s decision to serve. It’s a law that we all must follow. It’s also a damn shame that, yes, you guess it, people are turning this into a race issue. So you already know the playbook when an African American finds themselves in a situation: what do other races do? Especially in the media and race baiters online? They always try to dig up dirt, look for skeletons in their old closet when they were 7 years old. That’s an old playbook that never gets old. It’s just always run by a different coach! Allegedly, this black juror has past run-ins with the law in domestic violence. Whether it’s true or not, that doesn’t mean he should be singled out for making a moral decision. For example, as you’re reading all this, you suddenly forget what this blog was about from the beginning. Lindsay Clancy. It’s like everyone forgot that 3 kids are no longer here because she killed them. But yet, the black juror who, like most of America, found Lindsay guilty is in the wrong. Not Lindsay for killing her children, and also not her lawyer Kevin for unethically acknowledging that it was a man who was the hold-up during the deliberation. It’s absolutely ridiculous that a GoFundMe page was set up and surpassed $1 million. But should we be surprised by all this coverage and the support? I mean, history repeats itself. I’m sure y’all remember the Casey Anthony trial back in 2011, and how she was found not guilty of first-degree murder of her young daughter. The media coverage was massive, and she received a lot of support due to being a young white mother. Oh boy, here we go, you trying to make this a race thing. Well, yes, this is a race thing. Ask yourself: if this were a black mother, do you think she would get the support? Absolutely not. You would’ve most likely heard stories about her being an unfit mother who dealt with an absent father figure in her life, which led to her having a child by a deadbeat. The media would’ve even panned a Hispanic mother too if it was the other way around. With the toxic political environment that we’re in now, they, along with some politicians, would’ve gone so far as to suggest that she’s an illegal citizen and her child’s father is possibly connected to a drug cartel. That’s just the America we’re living in today.
My point is, Lindsay killed her children, she admitted. There’s no set-up; there’s no conspiracy. She basically planned out the timing and how to execute he plan. The only plan that failed was that she didn’t successfully kill herself. There are plenty of mothers who shared stories of their own postpartum experiences, and hardly any of them expressed thoughts of killing the child that they gave birth to. Again, postpartum psychosis is real, and even some men go through it too, even though it’s very rare. I know we millennials, as kids, stressed our parents out to the max, but not to the point where they wanted to off us. Eventually, there needs to be a point where people just can’t use mental help as a reason to do the unthinkable. Overall, it’s a sad situation, and no one wins in this case. I know Lindsay’s family is satisfied that her daughter wasn’t convicted of murder, but I know they realized that they lost young family members during all this. And to the black juror who stood on morals, I guess the hunt is on….
